VENUE: St Peter’s Church of Ireland, Drogheda

DATE: 14th August, 2018

TIME: 6pm

As part of Fleadh Cheoil 2018, world renowned uilleann piper Mick O’Brien will join the RTÉ Contempo Quartet and the Boyne Chamber Orchestra for a special performance of Michael Holohan’s The Road to Lough Swilly.

Commissioned by Na Píobairí Uilleann in 2001, this composition focuses on the extraordinary life of Hugh O’Neill, Earl of Tyrone. Twelve movements take us from Hugh’s early period as the ‘rascal horseboy’ of Tyrone through to the Battle of Kinsale, Flight of the Earls and final years as a ‘broken man’ in Rome.

Holohan’s piece makes use of traditional Irish musical forms including reels, jigs, slip jigs and slow airs that will thrill listeners in the magnificent acoustics of St. Peter’s Church of Ireland.

A CD of The Road to Lough Swilly, which features the night’s performers, will be launched by the composer. The double album also contains Running Beast, a music-theatre work inspired by Holohan’s piece and written by Donal O’Kelly.

Tickets for the performance can be purchased at
